Flags for heroes

About flags for heroes

Each summer, the Mathews Rotary Club’s Flags for Heroes display transforms Main Street into a powerful sea of red, white, and blue—each flag standing tall in honor of someone’s hero.

Whether it's a veteran, first responder, teacher, healthcare worker, or a beloved family member, this event is your opportunity to publicly recognize the people who’ve made a meaningful impact in your life. From Memorial Day weekend through Independence Day, the flags will fly proudly as a tribute to courage, service, and love—reminding all who pass by that heroes are all around us.

The flags display in the field by M&M Building Supply in Mathews.
HEROES COME IN MANY FORMS, ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT THEY ARE YOURS.

How it works

Honor your hero by sponsoring a flag, whether you are an individual or a business. Each 10 foot flagpole has a 3x5 American flag and a 4" recognition tag attached. The tag includes your hero's name, as well as your name as the sponsor. Following the event, you will receive the tag as a special keepsake and you and your Hero will be recognized in The Gazette Journal plus receive a tribute booklet with all sponsors and Heroes listed.

A HERO is anyone important in your life, whether they be:
  • Veterans, Military, First Responders (Fire, EMT, Law Enforcement). *These flags medallions will appear with an added ribbon to distinguish their service to our country.
  • Healthcare Workers
  • Teachers
  • Friends, Parents, Grandparents, Children, Grandchildren, Spouses
  • Civic Organizations

If you are unsure of whom to honor, you could choose to recognize all who protect our country.

The following sponsorship levels are outlined below. You will be redirected to a safe and secure website to purchase your sponsorship.

Please note: our medallion's space only allows for one hero plus a small description of your Hero. If you would like to share more about them, please click on the "Additional Comments" Button and you will be sent to a comment page. You may also comment there about what the Flags for Heroes program means to you. Thank you.

This year's medallion honors America's 250th Anniversary of Independence. Pass down your medallion to family members to hang onto for generations.
